BLM extends period to comment on horses

WINNEMUCCA - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has decided to give the public more time to comment on a controversial plan to round up more than 600 wild horses in the Jackson Mountains northwest of Winnemucca.

The comment period on the environmental assessment that was supposed to end Tuesday will continue until May 18.

The agency's proposed action would result in the removal of about three-fourths of the more than 800 wild horses estimated to be in the Jackson Mountain horse management area about 120 miles northeast of Reno.
