Don’t blame the school district for layoffs

To the editor:

It is sad to hear about Jude Greco's job being surplused, but in her Thursday letter to the editor, she blames the Clark County School District for "letting anyone go without reason or accountability." This is clearly not true.

Given the fixed budget resources, the district had no other choice but to reduce staff because the teacher union was unwilling to accept a wage freeze. If union officials had their way, wage increases would continue and be supported by increased property taxes on residents struggling to hang onto their homes - many of whom have not received the lavish wage increases enjoyed by the greedy public-sector workers.

In the public-sector world, the solution to any problem is always tax increases. This same spend-and-tax mentality has turned Europe into a financial mess and has crippled the strength of the U.S. dollar. The public needs to wake up and see the real enemy of prosperity.

Newspaper porn

To the editor:

I would not consider myself a prude, but when I opened the Thursday Neon section I was amazed to see a picture of a naked woman in the newspaper ("Fest proudly pushes erotic boundaries").

After reading the article, I was left wondering if the Review-Journal is reporting the news or if it has become an advertising outlet for the pornographic community.

I have been a subscriber for more than 20 years, and I am really disappointed that I helped pay for smut peddling in such an inappropriate place.

If you have run out of news to report, I am sure local churches would love free advertising space for their events.

Sorry, I forgot. Mentioning God for free would be politically incorrect and offensive - but pornography is a protected form of free speech and expression.

Children butchered

To the editor:

Another mass killing of women and children in Syria, as the feared Shabiha militia has stabbed, burned and executed numerous people in barbaric ways as a message to all Syrians who demand freedom and human rights.

Once again, all the United Nations will do is talk about economic sanctions while children are butchered in their homes.
