Federal grant to fund 64 Reno firefighters

RENO - The federal government has issued a $14 million grant to Reno to pay for 64 firefighters and fully staff more than a dozen fire stations.

The grant announced Thursday by U.S. Sen. Harry Reid is from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and comes as the city and Washoe County are ending a cooperative arrangement to provide fire services.

Reno officials were facing the potential of laying off firefighters if the county didn't hire any firefighters from the city to staff its new department

Mayor Bob Cashell said the funding means all of Reno's 14 fire stations will be open.
