State officials recommend $8,400 fine against Barrick

RENO - State environmental officials are recommending an $8,400 fine against mining giant Barrick Gold Corp. for missing a deadline to complete and report an air quality test at a mine in eastern Nevada.

Nevada Division of Environmental Protection spokesman Vinson Guthreau told the Reno Gazette-Journal that the Nevada State Environmental Commission will consider the recommendation on Tuesday.

Guthreau said the Cortez Gold Mine about 75 miles southwest of Elko remains open.

Company spokesman Lou Schack said Barrick Gold isn't contesting the fine and intends to pay it.

Barrick told the state in January that it failed to complete the required test at the mine by an April 18, 2011, deadline.

Schack said testing was completed but the company just missed the date.
