Police Chief Jutta Chambers
says she plans to retire March 1

Henderson Police Chief Jutta Chambers announced Feb. 16 that she plans to retire March 1. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, City Manager Mark Calhoun asked Chambers to resign following the 2010 videotaped police beating of a motorist who was in diabetic shock. Sources told the Review-Journal that Chambers is expected to take a buyout.

The city recently announced that it had reached a $257,000 settlement with the motorist, according to the Review-Journal. Deputy Chief James White will serve as acting chief.

Chambers has been with the department since 1983 and was the city's first female police officer. Calhoun announced on Feb. 14 that he plans to retire in May.

Learn how to do advanced internet searches during library program

Henderson Libraries is scheduled to host a secondary course on the Internet for people already familiar with the basics at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway. The advanced class is expected to cover methods of searching online. Class size is limited to 12 people and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

to meet Wednesday

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sun City MacDonald Ranch Community Center, 2020 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway. Mary Currey, the volunteer facilitator with the group, is expected to share a message at the event.

CHURCH GROUP plans FUNDRAISER

The youth group at Green Valley Presbyterian Church is planning a swap meet from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of the church, 1798 Wigwam Parkway. The event is a fundraiser for the group. Members are selling vendor spaces for $10 to church members and $25 for others. The event is open to the public. Southern Hills Republican Women
to host political activist

The Southern Hills Republican Women plan to host guest speaker Janet Levy, a political activist, public speaker and blogger, on Feb. 28 at Buckman's at the Revere Golf Club, 2600 Hampton Road. Doors will open at 11 a.m., and the luncheon is set to follow at 11:30 a.m. Guests are welcome.

Local website aims to offer deals, reunite lost pets with owners

PETching, a new local daily deal website that offers discounts on pet services from food to veterinary services, has added a lost-and-found feature to help residents report and search for lost pets. The site also offers a community forum where animal lovers can share information and recommendations. The company also plans to donate proceeds to local charities and animal shelters. SEWELL ELEMENTARY RECEIVES RECOGNITION FOR MATH GAINS

Sewell Elementary School, 700 E. Lake Mead Parkway, was named Rising Star of the Year for its achievements in math testing by the MIND Research Institute, a California-based nonprofit education group.

Sewell is one of seven historically low-performing elementary schools in the Clark County School District selected by the institute five years ago to participate in a computer-based learning pilot program.

Sewell's math proficiency score was 76 percent last school year, compared to 36 percent in 2002.

Henderson named one of the safest cities in the United States

A study by insuranceproviders.com has named Henderson one of the safest cities in America. The study showed that Henderson had the lowest crime rate of any city with a population of more than 100,000, it is at low risk of natural disasters, and drivers average 9.3 years between accidents.

Josh Stevens Foundation announces new kindness initiative

Starting in March, the Josh Stevens Foundation is launching "Take 5 to be Kind," an initiative to promote kindness, of the fifth of every month. The nonprofit was established in memory of Josh Stevens, a Henderson boy who died in 2008. The group plans to practice acts of kindness, such as donating money to feed children in Haiti or surprising families by paying for their layaway items. Learn about basic auto maintenance during workshops in March and April

The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department plans to host basic auto maintenance workshops in March and April. Enrollment is $9 per workshop and is for participants 18 or older.

Workshops are scheduled from 7 to
8:15 p.m. March 19 (activity 191152-36) and April 9 (activity 191152-37) at the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive. Another workshop is scheduled from 7 to 8:15 p.m. April 3 (activity 191152-48) at the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.

Topics are expected to include proper preventative care, including why it is important to change the car's oil, brake, power steering and radiator fluids. Participants will be taught how to perform basic tasks, including checking air pressure and tire treads and putting on a spare tire.

for May festival

Henderson is seeking artists to participate in an art festival May 12-13 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St.

The event, which is scheduled for Mother's Day weekend, is expected to feature artists, crafters, live entertainment, chalk art, interactive stations and children's activities.

Deadline for applications is March 19.

Registration under way
for Henderson Senior Games

Registration for the 2012 Henderson Senior Games is open through March 20. The annual program is a sporting and social event for athletes 50 or older and celebrates the spirit of friendly competition and achievement.

Registration is $15 per person (with exception to volleyball) and includes an event T-shirt. Most events entered cost $3 to $5 each. Registration will not be accepted after March 20, but walk- ins may be accepted at some events depending on space availability.

The Henderson Senior Games are scheduled from April 10-29 at a variety of Henderson locations. First-, second- and third-place awards will be presented at the close of each event.

Scheduled events include basketball skills, bowling (singles, doubles and mixed doubles), fitness and powerlifting, golf (18 holes), table tennis (singles, doubles and mixed doubles), tennis (singles, doubles and mixed doubles), volleyball (men's, women's and coed team play) and track and field (springs, runs, javelin, jumps, discus, shot put and softball throw).
