Baseball team held down
in shutout loss to rival UNR

The UNLV baseball team lost to instate rival UNR 1-0 on Sunday at Wilson Stadium, giving the Wolf Pack two wins in the three-game weekend series.

Joe Kohan supplied the lone run for UNR (7-4), hitting a triple in the third inning and scoring on a Jay Anderson groundout.

The Rebels (6-6) had runners on second and third in the eighth and first and second in the ninth, but couldn't push a run across. That spoiled a solid outing from starter Erick Fedde, who had six strikeouts and scattered eight hits in eight innings.

Also: The UNLV softball team lost to Seton Hall 5-0 in the final game of the Eller Media Stadium Classic, the Rebels' third straight loss.

The Pirates (6-8) got all the scoring they needed when Brittany Hammer led off the game with a home run. Seton Hall added a run in the second and three in the fifth.

UNLV (9-10) had the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, but couldn't produce a run.

The UNLV track and field team opened the outdoor season with seven wins as host of the UNLV Classic on Friday and Saturday. Emily Blok (100-meter dash), Kelsey Williamson (400) and Brett Zorich (800) won their respective events, as did the distance medley relay team.

Amanda Bingson (hammer throw), Ria Daniels (triple jump) and Myshauna Alexander (javelin) also notched wins.

reaches deal on four-year pact

Marshawn Lynch, the Seattle Seahawks' bulldozing, candy-loving running back, signed a four-year contract that will keep him in a Seattle uniform for the prime of his NFL career and coming off his finest season.

Seattle announced the move less than 24 hours before today's deadline for teams to use the franchise tag, and Lynch would have been owed more than $7 million for one season if Seattle used the tag on him. A person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press that Lynch's contract is worth $31 million, including $18 million guaranteed.
