A dog is dead and two people were treated for smoke inhalation in a fire that gutted four apartments Wednesday in downtown Las Vegas.

Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said the blaze began just after 8:30 a.m. at the New York Apartments, near the Stratosphere.

Authorities said the fire was accidental, possibly a result of careless smoking.
