Las Vegas-area ski resort claiming first-open honors

Officials at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort are claiming a slim victory over some Colorado resorts in an unofficial competition to be first to open this season. They said they opened the slope at 7:33 a.m. Saturday, 27 minutes before Wolf Creek Ski Area opened in Pagosa Springs, Colo.

Early opening U.S. ski resorts, mainly in Colorado, were competing in a "race to open" on Twitter, although there's no official nationwide list on openings.

The Las Vegas resort reported 9 inches of natural snow and 4 inches of artificial snow.

Wolf Creek CEO Davey Pitcher said the Colorado resort would be open more continuously for the rest of the season, while the Las Vegas resort closed after the weekend until Nov. 25.
