Officials break ground on Federal Justice Tower

City and federal officials gathered in an empty parking lot in downtown Las Vegas on Monday to mark the groundbreaking of a new federal office building.

By early 2013, the site on Las Vegas Boulevard across the street from the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse will house a 10-story, 129,000-square-foot office building called the Federal Justice Tower.

The U.S. Attorney's Office will move from the courthouse into the new building, which it will share with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

SDA Inc. will erect the building and rent it to the federal agencies. The project will create about 300 construction jobs.

Construction is expected to take 16 months.

"Hopefully it will come in early and under budget," Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said.
