Crews battle wildfire burning away from homes
Crews are battling to protect homes from a wildfire that has charred about 1,000 acres near the Lyon County community of Wellington.
Terah Malsam of the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center said that while the fire now is burning away from homes, it still threatens habitat of the endangered sage grouse.
Malsam said it's uncertain when about 380 firefighters would be able to contain and control the blaze.
The fire was among more than a dozen sparked by thunderstorms on Friday afternoon along the eastern Sierra both to the north and south of Reno.
The fire is scorching pinyon-juniper woodlands on Nevada land managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management near Burbank Canyon in Smith Valley.
Five air tankers and three helicopters are assisting ground crews.
