BLM, volunteers scheduled to clean up Sloan rock art area

When it comes to the American Indian rock art in Southern Nevada, few examples are as impressive as the petroglyphs at Sloan National Conservation Area near Henderson on the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard.

I n honor of National Public Lands Day, employees of the Bureau of Land Management and scores of volunteers will descend on Sloan Sept. 24 with work gloves and sturdy boots.

Sloan, called the Sistine Chapel of Native American rock art by the Conservation Lands Foundation, has been victimized by litterbugs and vandals in recent years.

The volunteers will also pick up litter, plant native trees, remove invasive plants, install signs and restore trails, according to BLM spokeswoman Kirsten Cannon.

The Public Lands Foundation will provide water and snacks.
