Afternoon scrimmage fails to please Hauck

ELY — UNLV coach Bobby Hauck was happy his Rebels didn't play Wisconsin today.

But the Sept. 1 season opener is close enough, and Hauck hopes for a better effort than what he saw in this afternoon's scrimmage.

“It wasn’t very good,” Hauck said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. It just wasn’t good enough. We’re inside of two weeks from Wisconsin, and we wouldn’t have been good enough to play with them today.

“We didn’t play fast enough. We were inconsistent in every phase. It’s all those things that get you beat.”

QB UPDATE

Hauck didn't rule out naming the starting quarterback Sunday.

Sophomore Caleb Herring has been leading the competition all training camp, and he didn't do much to hurt his cause in the scrimmage. He completed 5 of 5 passes for 74 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman fullback William Vea.

“I’d be really disappointed in myself if I hadn’t done everything that I can to get the No. 1 spot,” Herring said. “But we have (five) days left in camp, so it’s still like day one to me.”

Herring admitted he was fired up when the Rebels signed junior college transfer Sean Reilly to compete for the job.

"It sparked competition," Herring said. "It was a sign to me that this program needs a quarterback. So it was my job to step up and fulfill that role, just as I'm sure he felt the same way coming in."

Reilly completed 3 of 9 passes for 56 yards and an interception. He said he generally was pleased with his play, but added "there are things I could improve on."

BROWN OUT

Junior safety Corbin Brown injured his left ankle and had to leave the scrimmage.

“When he hurt it, I figured he had a high ankle sprain,” Hauck said. “If that’s in fact what it is, then that can go anywhere from less than a week to eight weeks.”

LEADERS

Redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Barnhill had runs of 30 and 41 yards.

Sophomore Tim Cornett led all rushers with 32 yards on seven carries. Fellow sophomore Bradley Randle gained 22 yards on seven attempts.

Sophomore Marcus Sullivan led all receivers with three catches for 53 yards, though he lost a fumble

Senior linebacker Nate Carter blocked a punt and forcing a fumble.

Sophomore linebacker Tim Hasson intercepted a pass, and redshirt freshman safety Tajh Hasson, his half-brother, recovered a fumble.
