The United Way's Women's Leadership Council honored three women as leaders in education, health and financial stability at the annual Women's Leadership Luncheon on March 2 at Caesars Palace.
Honorees were Terri Janison, director of community relations for Gov. Brian Sandoval (2011 Commitment to Education Award); Michele Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Nevada and Utah (2011 Financial Stability Award); and Dee Ladd, founder of the Sunrise Children's Foundation (2011 Access to Healthcare Award).
The Boy Scouts of America Las Vegas Area Council recognized the 2011 Silver Beaver recipients at its annual dinner Feb. 16. The 21 recipients were honored for their service to youth and the scouting organization.
Among the honorees were Las Vegas residents Christopher Bowman, Blake Alan Burr, Brad Gilmore, Susan A. Jacobson, Steven F. Martin, Thomas C. "Chuck" Marzka, Mac McIntire, Dennis R. Pumphrey, Rick D. Roskelley, Jeffrey W. Shaw, James P.C. Silvestri, Darin Swainston, Paul Theile and Lana Kay Warner. Henderson honorees were Francine M. Gollmer, David E. Larsen, Michael Messina, Bramby Ann Tollen, Tammy Villarrel-Crabb and Paul E. Wilson. Recipient Teri Anderson is a resident of Mesquite.
Max Solano of Las Vegas won the inaugural Classic Cocktail Competition hosted by 4 Orange Premium Vodka Feb. 25 in Miami Beach, Fla.
Solano, a mixologist and beverage director for chef Emeril Lagasse's Delmonico Steakhouse at The Venetian and Table 10 at Palazzo, was among 10 mixologists from across the country who prepared an original 4 Orange Vodka cocktail for the competition.
Solano used the basis of a traditional sling for his modern cocktail creation, the South Beach Sling. The mixologist incorporated four orange flavors in the cocktail and used sparkling wine for carbonation in place of club soda.
Solano's South Beach Sling cocktail creation won him a $3,000 cash prize, trophy and the title of U.S. Champion 2011.
Local mixologists Chris Hopkins and Darren West earned second and fourth place, respectively, in the 2011 Shake it Up! Competition during the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show that took place recently in Las Vegas.
Hopkins, a mixologist at Vesper Bar at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, created De Peché Mode for the contest, and West, a mixologist at JG Steakhouse at Aria, entered The Monks Share. The winner was Mathias Simonis of Milwaukee.

For the 10th consecutive year, Penn & Teller will serve as grand marshals for the AIDS Walk Las Vegas, which is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. April 17 at the World Market Center, near Bonneville Avenue and Grand Central Parkway.
The duo also are hosting the Penn & Teller Challenge for the Aid for AIDS of Nevada annual fundraiser. The entertainers will match all money raised by those who sign up for the challenge.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will honor chef Wolfgang Puck and his managing partners, Tom Kaplan, David Robins and Joe Essa, for their support of the organization and contributions to the Las Vegas community at the 2011 Hope Gala ... SAVORI.
The benefit for the Nevada chapter of the foundation is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 6 at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South, and will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, silent and live auctions, and entertainment.
