BYU shows depth, rolls over TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Jimmer-mania isn't always a solo act for seventh-ranked Brigham Young.

While Jimmer Fredette scored 23 points despite another tough shooting game, four other Cougars also scored in double figures in a 79-56 victory over Texas Christian on Saturday in a sold-out arena filled with BYU fans and others just wanting to get a look at the nation's leading scorer.

"I didn't think I played very good. ... I had some unforced errors, didn't make some shots I'd normally make," said Fredette, who was 6 of 16 overall, including 3 of 9 on 3-pointers. "It doesn't matter. We won the game; that's what we came to do."

After Garlon Green hit a 3-pointer to get TCU within 27-24, the Cougars (25-2, 11-1 Mountain West) took control with an 18-4 run in the final 6:09 of the first half. That started with 11 consecutive points scored by five BYU players -- none of them named Fredette, whose only point in that half-ending run came on a free throw in the final minute.

"We have a very good team," Fredette said. "It's hard to guard five guys."

Especially when teams such as TCU (10-18, 1-12) are double-teaming Fredette and sometimes post player Brandon Davies. Fredette, who also had six turnovers, finished four points below his season scoring average.

The highlight-reel scorer was coming off a 7-for-19 shooting game in a win over Utah, when he also had 23 points. He has scored at least 20 points in 12 consecutive games.

Stephen Rogers scored 15 points in 15 minutes for BYU. Davies and Jackson Emery scored 11 each, and Noah Hartsock had 10.

J.R. Cadot had 17 points and nine rebounds for TCU, which has lost 10 consecutive games and 14 of 15. The Frogs have also lost 15 in a row against BYU.

■ No. 6 San Diego State 70, Air Force 58 -- At Air Force Academy, Colo., Malcolm Thomas scored 20 points, and Kawhi Leonard posted his 19th double-double to help the Aztecs outlast the Falcons and set a school record with their 27th win.

Leonard had 18 points and 15 rebounds as the Aztecs (27-1, 12-1) beat the Falcons (13-12, 4-8) for the seventh straight time. Thomas grabbed 13 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.

The Aztecs now get six days to prepare for seventh-ranked BYU, which handed them their only loss this season, 71-58 on Jan. 26 in Provo, Utah.

■ Utah 62, New Mexico 60 -- At Albuquerque, N.M., Chris Hines banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Utes over the Lobos.

New Mexico's Phillip McDonald missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw opportunity with 17.3 seconds left, and Utah pushed it upcourt. The Utes (12-15, 5-8 Mountain West) lost control of the ball at the top of the key with the final seconds ticking off before Hines gained control and got off an off-balance shot that hit the glass and dropped through.

Drew Gordon had 17 points and a Mountain West Conference-record 23 rebounds for the Lobos (17-10, 5-7), who lost their fourth straight.
