A Look at the New New American Home
The New American 2011 keeps up with the Joneses – if the Joneses happen to live in an American Empire-style ultra-green machine.
In step with demand for energy- and resource-efficiency, the New American Home 2011 – unveiling at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando from Jan. 12 to 15, 2011 – has been built to achieve the National Green Building Standard’s “Emerald” status, the highest recognized level of resource efficiency.
“Whether you’re looking for inspiration on green building, technology systems integration or the latest in design trends, this home will give you great ideas that you can take back to your business,” says Alex Hannigan, TNAH Task Force chairman, of the home.
The custom residence, an annual IBS now in its 28th year, features a solar-assisted HVAC system, solar hot water heater (with gas backup), open and closed spray foam insulation for different parts of the house and photovoltaic cells, plus a gray-water recycling system, tankless hot water heaters, hydronic air handlers and “intelligent” fireplaces.
Other energy-and resource-efficiency features include:
• Energy Star-rated appliances
• Low-VOC paints, stains, adhesives and sealants
• Formaldehyde-free wood cabinetry, paneling and sheathing
• Whole-house automation and lighting control systems
• Dual-flush toilets
• Low-flow showerheads and faucets
• Native and drought-tolerant plants
• Rainwater harvesting system
The home’s design aesthetic, featuring Greek Revival elements, also spotlights fountains, pools, solar elements and glass work.
