Small earthquake reported southwest of Gardnerville

GARDNERVILLE -- A small earthquake bumped western Nevada on New Year's Day, but no damage was reported.

A preliminary U.S. Geological Survey report measured the temblor at a magnitude 3.6. It was centered about five miles southwest of Gardnerville.

The report is preliminary because it was computer generated and not reviewed by a seismologist, though it was felt by residents in the area.
