Japan’s nuke dangers

The horrific disaster in Japan is almost beyond words. Earthquake, volcanic eruptions, killer tsunami and now an evolving nuclear scare.

As for the nuke piece of the disaster, most of us are in the dark on the science of it all. We're left to talking heads on TV, most of whom are either as ignorant on nuke science as most of us or are anti-nuke partisan's hoping to parlay Japan's misery into slowing down even more the development of nuclear energy in America. It is therefore all the more important to have access to authoritative information because the nature of the 24-hour news cycle is likely to blow developments up in the craze to be first to report the news. We've already seen some of it. There's been a loud explosion at reactor No. 2 -- OMG! There's high winds in Tokyo -- OMG! The core is heating up -- OMG! There's been reported another loud noise at the one of the nuke plants -- OMG!

Anyhow, you get the picture. If you're one of the folks who just want the facts like, say, how did these nuke plants survived an earthquake 5 times more powerful than they were originally designed for; how have they contained most of the radioactivity up till now; and you'd just generally like to get off the OMG! train for a moment, here are four links worth your while.
