Darnell Elementary School
offers full-day kindergarten

Darnell Elementary School, 9480 W. Tropical Parkway, is offering full-day, tuition-based kindergarten for the
2011-12 school year.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3:21 p.m. Monday through Friday and costs $325 a month. Registration is open through April 29.

Thompson Elementary School
plans full-day kindergarten

Thompson Elementary School, 7351 N. Campbell Road, plans to offer full-day, tuition-based kindergarten for children who are 5 or older by Sept. 30 for the 2010-11 school year.

Elementary school students
participate in read-a-thon

Students at 22 elementary schools read nearly 1.3 million pages during Nevada Reading Week as part of the annual Pennies for Pages Read-a-Thon.

The reading challenge is part of the Kids to Kids program, sponsored by Spread the Word Nevada, a children's literacy nonprofit group.

Cultural Diversity Foundation
offers scholarships

The Cultural Diversity Foundation is offering college scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $2,500.

Students must be Clark County residents, maintain a 3.0 GPA and show financial need.

The deadline for submissions is May 6. For a complete list of scholarships, criteria and applications, visit cdfnv.org/scholarships or call 646-2615.

The foundation also plans to host online workshops with tips on how to search and locate scholarships online.

The class is open to college-bound high school students and college students.

Children's literacy advocate group receives $100,000 grant

The children's literacy nonprofit group Spread the Word Nevada has received a $100,000 grant from Los Angeles-based Windsong Trust.

The grant coincides with Spread the Word Nevada's 10-year anniversary and will allow the expansion of book distributions and literacy programs that have helped more than 187,000 low-income students in the valley.

Tuition grants available for medical assistants and phlebotomists

The Medical Skills for Life Institute is offering $2,000 and $500 tuition grants through April 8 for students interested in becoming medical assistants or phlebotomists.

Scholarships available for students
of Norwegian descent

The Sons of Norway's Vegas Viking Lodge is accepting applications for scholarships for high school seniors of Norwegian descent.

Last year's scholarships ranged from $250 to $750. Scholarships are determined by grades, financial need, extracurricular activities and the application essay.

The application is due April 20 and is available at vegasviking.com/scholarship.

The Basic High School class of 1971's 40th reunion is set for Oct. 7-9 at the Fiesta Henderson, 777 W. Lake Mead Parkway.
