Reno seeks bids on $2.6 million bus station project

RENO -- Reno's Regional Transportation Commission is seeking construction bids on a $2.6 million transit bus station project.

The Gazette-Journal of Reno reported the commission plans to add six bus stations along south Virginia Street over the summer.

Transit Director David Jickling said the structures are designed to be more like shelters than buildings. The shelters will be the same length as the new rapid transit buses.

Jickling said station designs call for better lighting and raised platforms that make boarding easier and faster.

The stations will also have ticket machines and video screens with the latest route information.

The stations also are designed to be used for streetcars, which are proposed for eventual use on Reno's busiest corridor.

Transit authorities hope to begin construction on the six stations in May.
