Mayoral candidate George Harris starts running TV ads

George Harris, one of the 18 candidates for Las Vegas mayor, has joined the handful who are advertising on television.

The ad, "Political Interpreter," has been posted online and started running on TV Monday. Two more ads will join the rotation in the middle of the week, Harris said.

In his first ad, he promises to suspend all business license fees as a way to encourage business growth and to balance the budget. He said all Nevada cities must balance their budgets anyway because the law requires it.

Harris is critical of city employee salaries, saying the bargaining units need to agree to additional cuts in salaries and benefits in order to help the city's financial picture.

He also said he wants to eliminate parking meters and parking enforcement personnel and bemoaned the "oligarchy of absolute bureaucracy" that he said permeates the city's licensing and permitting departments.

He said he's spending $18,000 on television this week and he plans to increase next week and the week after March 19, which is when early voting begins.

Candidates Carolyn Goodman, Larry Brown and Victor Chaltiel already are airing television spots, while candidate Chris Giunchigliani is sticking to online videos for now.
