Applications being accepted to fill district judge vacancy

The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection is accepting applications through April 1 to fill a vacancy in the Fifth Judicial District that covers Nye, Esmeralda and Mineral counties.

Longtime District Judge John Davis died on Jan. 26.

Applicants must be Nevada attorneys with at least 10 years of legal experience, two of those in the state.

After all applications are submitted, the commission will conduct background investigations and interview the candidates in early May.

The commission then will nominate three finalists to Gov. Brian Sandoval, who will make the appointment.

The appointed judge must run in the 2012 election to retain the seat.
