How did I converse with thee? Facebook Messaging counts the ways

Leave it to Facebook to announce that all 500 million-plus members can have an @facebook.com e-mail address and in the next breath say it's not really e-mail. Huh?

Welcome to Facebook Messaging, a new communications platform coming soon. It will put all your electronic conversations with a single person into a single spot — on Facebook, of course. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the platform in a press event this morning. He said he believes that in future electronic communications, people will send more, shorter messages instead of longer e-mail messages.

I like the idea of a historical record of all the digital conversations (e-mail, text messages, chat) I've had with a person, which is one of the touted features of Messaging. I'm not sure how, or if, Facebook will pull in communications from the past (or whether I even want this). If done right, Facebook could indeed change the way people communicate via computers, phones and websites.

I'm looking forward to seeing Facebook Messaging in action. Stay tuned.
