Spurs retain star guard Parker
with four-year, $50 million pact

Tony Parker swore he didn't want to leave San Antonio, and he has a new contract to prove it.

The Spurs signed Parker to a multiyear extension Saturday that preserves their three-time NBA champion core of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and the star point guard, and puts an abrupt end to what would've undoubtedly been a season of speculation.

The extension is for $50 million over four years, according to Parker's website.

Rumors swirled over the summer about where the 28-year-old former All-Star might end up after this season, but Parker has insisted that he and his wife, actress Eva Longoria Parker, wanted to remain in San Antonio.

Also: The Portland Trail Blazers won't offer a contract extension to former No. 1 pick Greg Oden before the Monday deadline, a team spokesman said.

The Oregonian reported Friday that the Blazers and Oden's representatives agreed there would be no extension, making the oft-injured center the first top pick since Kwame Brown not to get one at the end of his rookie contract.

Portland hasn't seen enough of Oden, who has played in only 82 games since he was picked ahead of Kevin Durant. He has been sidelined since fracturing his left patella in December. Oden will be a restricted free agent next summer, and the Blazers will be able to match any offers for him.

The Blazers exercised their fourth-year options on the contracts of Nicolas Batum and Rudy Fernandez.

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry will miss today's road game against the Los Angeles Lakers with a sprained right ankle.

Notre Dame coach says it was
his call to hold outdoor practice

Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly said it was his decision to hold practice outdoors on a windy day when a student videographer died after the lift he was in fell over.

Kelly said he decided the Irish could have a productive and safe practice on their outdoor practice fields Wednesday, despite the wind. The National Weather Service said the breeze was gusting up to 51 mph at the time the tower that 20-year-old Declan Sullivan was in toppled to the ground.

Notre Dame had systems in place that deal with safety issues at practice, but those systems failed and are being evaluated, Kelly said.

Also: Southern California will construct a $70 million athletics building with new offices and training facilities for the football team, new athletic director Pat Haden announced.

Construction on the two-story, 110,000-square foot building will begin in January, finishing in about 18 months. Haden and new USC president Max Nikias say they've begun fundraising efforts.

Rodrigo Carreon kicked a 19-yard field goal to give Jacksonville (Texas) an 84-81 win over host Nacogdoches on Friday night in a high school football game that lasted 12 overtime periods. The game possibly set a national record. The National High School Record Book lists two games that lasted nine overtimes.
