Man in wheelchair struck, killed

A man in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday morning after he ventured onto a highway offramp.

Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman trooper Joseph Fackrell said the man, who was not identified, was riding south on the northbound Spring Mountain Road offramp on Interstate 15 about 12:40 a.m. when he was struck.

The man was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The ramp was closed until 4 a.m.

Officials with NHP initially said the victim was a woman, but later said the victim's name only "sounded like a woman's name," according to spokeswoman trooper Chelita Rojas.

The Clark County coroner's office will identify the victim.
