Legacy High School student arrested for heroin possession

A student was arrested at Legacy High School in North Las Vegas at 8:30 a.m. Monday for bringing about an ounce of heroin onto campus, Clark County School District police said.

The 17-year-old boy, whose name was not released because he is a minor, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and taken to a juvenile detention center.

"We're not sure who his customers are," School Police Lt. Ken Young said. "We could assume they would be students."

School police said the heroin arrest was atypical.

"Normally kids of high school age are experimenting with marijuana," Young said. "This is an unusual case for us."

The boy originally ran from a confrontation with school administrators and then dropped his backpack, which contained about 26.7 grams of heroin. School police officers caught up with the boy and arrested him.

Legacy, 150 W. Deer Springs Way, is near Commerce Street.
