White scores 30 as San Diego State knocks off No. 11 Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Green Valley High School product Billy White scored a career-high 30 points as No. 25 San Diego State beat No. 11 Gonzaga 79-76 on Tuesday night, dealing the Bulldogs just their fifth home loss at the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened in 2004.
Kawhi Leonard added 18 points for San Diego State (2-0), which is ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in school history.
Steven Gray scored a career-high 35 points for Gonzaga (2-1), which had not lost at home since the 2008-09 season, against Portland State.
Gray scored 14 of the Bulldogs' final 15 points but turned the ball over in the closing seconds.
The Aztecs used a strong inside game to score and good defense to harass Gonzaga into bad shots much of the game. The Bulldogs made just 5 of 18 3-pointers.
Gray's layup pulled Gonzaga within 77-76 with 23 seconds left.
Leonard was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made both free throws to put San Diego State up 79-76 with 22 seconds left.
Gray brought the ball up the court, but it was batted away and recovered by an Aztecs player.
Gray's long 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed.
■ New Mexico 76, Arizona State 62 -- At Albuquerque, N.M., the backcourt of Dairese Gary and Kendall Williams combined for 33 points to lead the Lobos over the Sun Devils.
Arizona State's Trent Lockett led all scorers with 22 points, but no other Sun Devil reached double figures.
Gary scored 18, and Williams added 15 points and three steals for the Lobos.
New Mexico (2-0) used a 20-0 run over a seven-minute span to turn a 13-7 deficit into a 27-13 advantage. The Lobos had four steals in the stretch, while Arizona State (0-1) went 0-for-7 from the field.
■ Texas Christian 84, Southern Methodist 64 -- At Fort Worth, Texas, Sammy Yeager and Garlon Green each scored 17 points and Hank Thorns had a double-double as the Horned Frogs beat the Mustangs.
Thorns finished with 13 points and 10 assists and Ronnie Moss added 16 points for TCU (2-0), which has won three straight in this crosstown rivalry. Robert Nyakundi led SMU (0-2) with 14 points.
■ Northern Colorado 67, Wyoming 53 -- At Greeley, Colo., Devon Beitzel scored 20 points as the Bears beat the Cowboys (1-1) for the first time in 73 years.
Northern Colorado (1-0), coming off its best record in school history at 25-8, had lost 20 consecutive games to Wyoming.
