Shipp, defense propel Locos to UFL win over Sacramento
Marcel Shipp scored his second rushing touchdown of the season, and the Las Vegas defense continued its strong play as the Locomotives beat the Sacramento Mountain Lions 26-3 on Friday night in a United Football League game in Sacramento, Calif.
Shipp gave the Locos a 16-3 lead with 11:03 to play on a 5-yard scoring run, Las Vegas' only offensive touchdown.
Las Vegas, which improved to a league-leading 3-1, also scored a touchdown on Wale Dada's 58-yard interception return with 3:35 remaining.
Kicker Steve Hauschka accounted for the rest of the Locos' scoring, with first-half field goals of 47, 44 and 34 yards.
The victory could prove costly for the Locos. Starting quarterback Tim Rattay left the game late with an Achilles tendon injury and walked off the field on crutches. He will be further evaluated today.
"It doesn't look good right now," Locos coach Jim Fassel said. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Tim has done a great job for us all year, and I hope it's not a season-ending injury."
The Locos' defense intercepted Mountain Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper four times and forced six turnovers. Las Vegas safety Lewis Baker recovered a fumble, forced a fumble and had an interception.
"Our defense has been great all year," Fassel said. "They played outstanding, we got good pressure on the quarterback, and we did a lot of things very well."
The Mountain Lions fell to 1-3.
