ACLU asks FBI to turn over race, ethnicity data

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada today asked the FBI's Las Vegas field office to turn over records related to the agency's collection and use of race and ethnicity data in local communities.

The request was part of a coordinated national ACLU effort using the Freedom of Information Act to acquire such records from local FBI offices.

The ACLU said the FBI's 2008 operations guide states that agents have the authority to collect information about and map communities with concentration ethnic populations. That invites unconstitutional racial profiling by law enforcement, the ACLU said.
