Opportunity Village gets OK to open temporary thrift store

Opportunity Village received permission Thursday night to open a temporary thrift store while rebuilding its downtown location, which was destroyed by fire.

On a 6-0 vote, the Las Vegas Planning Commission approved the permit needed to open in an empty retail store at 4600 Meadows Lane, near Decatur Boulevard and Alta Drive.

"I understand your predicament," said Commissioner Vicki Quinn. "This will be a good location for you and it will also be good for the shopping center."

The permit is good for two years, which is how long Opportunity Village estimates the rebuilding process will take.

Representatives of the popular charity said they would most likely be opening the temporary location next week.

The longtime Main Street location of the thrift store burned in July. The fire's cause was ruled undetermined by the Las Vegas Fire Department.
