Man, 36, drowns near shoreline at Lake Mead

A 36-year-old Las Vegas man drowned in Lake Mead National Recreation Area on Monday.

Officials said the man, who was not identified, had been swimming a few feet from the shore at Government Wash when he went under. He was not wearing a life vest and alcohol might have been a factor in the drowning, authorities said.

National Park Service rangers were on scene within 10 minutes of the 3 p.m. call, spokesman Andrew Muñoz said. Nearby people on jet skis had pulled the man's body out of roughly 6 feet of water and began CPR.

CPR continued for about 30 minutes before the man was declared dead, Muñoz said.

The incident was the fourth water-related death at the lake this year.
