LV officer who fired on suspect ID’d

The Las Vegas police officer who shot at an armed suspect Sunday was identified by the department Tuesday as Jeremy Jacobitz.

Jacobitz, 34, has been with the Metropolitan Police Department since 2006. He is assigned to the Downtown Area Command Patrol Division, police said.

The suspect, who told police his name was Freddy Ortiz, was in the courtyard of 3225 Arlene Way, near Cheyenne Avenue and Michael Way, shooting a gun into the air when officers arrived, police said.

When officers exited their vehicle to confront Ortiz, he turned toward them with the weapon, police said. Jacobitz then fired one shot, missing the suspect.

Ortiz later was found hiding in a trash bin at 5400 Cheyenne Ave. He was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm in a public place.

Jacobitz has been placed on routine, paid administrative leave by the department pending completion of the investigation.
