Former Nevada Chief Justice Gunderson dies

Former Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice E.M. "Al" Gunderson, who sat on the high court during an era marked by infighting, died Thursday at his Las Vegas home. He was 80.

Longtime friend Bill Curran, a Las Vegas attorney, visited Gunderson moments before his death but said the former justice was not responsive. On Friday, Curran remembered Gunderson as an "unrestrained workaholic."

"Al was a controversial guy, but I'm proud to say that he was my friend and my mentor and inspiration," Curran said.

Gunderson was elected to the state Supreme Court in November 1970 and served three terms as chief justice before retiring from the high court at the end of 1988.
