Somehow, the Liberty Stump doesn’t have the same ring to it

Only 4 percent of Americans can name the five freedoms mentioned in the First Amendment. Many think the there is too much free speech and free press in this country.

There is an initiative afoot to try to change that.

It is called the Liberty Tree Initiative — a coalition of educators, journalists, librarians, artists and authors. It was founded by the American Society of News Editors along with the Knight Foundation, the McCormick Foundation and the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University. It's chief spokesman is Ken Paulson, former editor of USA Today and head of the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Among the efforts by the initiative is to conduct conferences on university campuses.
