iPad strikes out at big ballpark in the Bronx

If you're heading to Yankee Stadium, be sure to leave your iPad at home, because the gadgets aren't permitted there. An Associated Press story in today's New York Times says Major League Baseball has left it up to each club to decide whether the tablet computer is welcome in its park. The Yanks aren't allowing them because of "safety and security issues." (The story also says fans can’t bring laptops into the ballpark either, although each Yankee players has a computer screen at his lockers.)

I guess a fan distracted from what's happening on the field by looking at an iPad is somehow different than a fan distracted by reading a program or yearbook, or even talking to a friend or buying a hot dog or beverage.

What's next? No mobile phones permitted? I just don't get it.

When it rolled out the iPad, I recall Apple touting the MLB At Bat application and its Gameday feature as a highlight. I guess no one checked with the Yankees first.
