Legacy student arrested on gun charges

A student was arrested Thursday on charges he brought a handgun to Legacy High School in North Las Vegas.

Clark County School District police received an anonymous tip from a parent that a 15-year-old male student had a loaded gun in his backpack at the school, located at 150 W. Deer Springs Way, near W. Centennial Parkway, said district police Lt. Ken Young.

"The information turned out to be credible," Young said.

The student was cooperative and school activities were not disrupted, Young said. Police did not say why the student brought the gun to school or identify the juvenile.

"That's part of the investigation," he said.

School district officials said proper disciplinary action will be taken. Letters detailing the incident will be sent to parents of students at the school.

"We take anything like that very seriously, the safety of students is very important," said district spokesman Michael Rodriguez.

Young said a total of 16 guns have been confiscated at Clark County schools since July, down from about 40 guns at this time last year.
