Federal funds sought for flood damage in Mohave County

KINGMAN, Ariz. — Mohave County declared a flood emergency and is seeking federal funds to repair damage caused by a series of storms that drenched northwest Arizona last week.

Emergency Management Coordinator Byron Steward said officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are expected to assess damages this week.

“We’re pretty sure we’ve got something in excess of $1 million in infrastructure damage, primarily to county roads and crossings of washes,” Steward said.

He said flood damage to homes is not extensive.

Many areas in the nation's fifth-largest county received more than their annual average of precipitation last week. Ten inches of rain fell at a weather station just east of Kingman.

More than 12.8 inches of rain was measured at a station in the south part of the county near Wikieup.

Kingman Airport officials said strong winds moved every airplane not housed in a hangar, extensively damaging several aircraft.

The wind also toppled more than 20 electric utility poles just north of Kingman.
