How’s that RomneyCare working out for you?

I was chatting recently with a former co-worker at a reunion of the staffers of the Miami News. We mostly avoided politics and caught up on family and friends, while exchanging tales of practical jokes (Like the time co-workers snuck into Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Don Wright's office every day and added a key. It took Wright a week to notice.), scoops and late night snacks on cafe Cubano — strong, dark espresso laced with an equal amount of sugar — and medianoches — pressed Cuban sandwiches of pork, ham, cheese and pickle.

But one co-worker who now lives in Massachusetts did remark that without the state's RomneyCare passage that he probably couldn't get health insurance. It was an implication that ObamaCare might not be all that bad after all. Kind of like Medicare.

All I could think of, but kept to myself, was: The first investors in Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme were very pleased with their returns on their investments and recommended it to others. But every scheme that forces new investors to cover the commitments to earlier ones, always falls apart.

I wonder how he voted in the Senate race.
