Small plane damaged during landing at Death Valley National Park airport

A small plane was heavily damaged Wednesday as it was trying to land at Furnace Creek Airport at Death Valley National Park, officials said.

The airplane was carrying a family of three and trying to land at about 10:45 a.m. when it ran off the end of the runway, park rangers said. The pilot attributed the incident to mechanical issues.

Park rangers said neither the family aboard the plane nor anyone else was injured. Furnace Creek Airport is shut down until the plane wreckage is removed, although the extent of the damage wasn’t specified.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
