Drive now, text later

A recent poll by The New York Times and CBS News shows that 97 percent of the respondents feel that text messaging while driving should be illegal. This study from the University of Kansas http://www.kutri.ku.edu/news/texting.html suggests Americans are sending themselves into early graves by texting while driving.

Why, then, do so many people continue to do it? I see it happening many times every day.

I urge everyone to toss their mobile phone on the seat next to them, or better yet, keep it tucked away in a pocket or purse, while you're behind the wheel. Even better, turn the phone off until you reach your destination. It saves lives. Even Tom and Ray Magliozzi, Click and Clack from National Public Radio’s "Car Talk" say so in their "Drive Now, Talk Later" campaign. http://www.cartalk.com/content/features/Drive-Now/index.html

A public service announcement from the United Kingdom showing the hazards of text-distracted driving made the rounds this summer. It may be considered over the top by some folks, but it surely delivers a message.

The same holds true for speaking on mobile phones. Don't do it!
