Angle’s angle on terror trials

U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle is against holding trials for alleged terrorists in civilian fedeal courts.

In a letter to her potential opponent, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., Angle bemoans the notion.

"These terrorists understand that having access to our civilian courts permits them another avenue to impose additional economic injury on our soil and another platform to create notoriety-craving attention-grabbing headlines as they continue to recruit and plan against us," she wrote in a statement sent to the press with the letter.

Angle is one of at least nine Republicans seeking to challenge Reid, each trying to carve out a niche for themselves among the electorate.

She sent her statement opposing trials for terrorists on Monday, which was Pearl Harbor Day.

Attorney General Eric Holder supports federal court trials, as opposed to military commissions, for alleged terrorists such as accused Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

In a recent article in Slate, an online magazine, Holder was paraphrased stating, "military commissions had produced only three convictions, 300 international and domestic terrorists are in custody following civilian trials in federal court, including the men responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and attacks on U.S. Embassies in Africa.

The article also quoted Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., who pointed out the Bush administration tried Zacarias Moussaoui, the alleged 20th hijacker in Virginia, not far from the Pentagon, and Moussaoui was convicted and put into prison without any apparent success at manipulating the platform of court into a venue for anti-American publicity.
