Women continue to make strides in distance running
When Caroline Rotich of Kenya crossed the finish line this morning in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon, she was part of a trend in distance running. Namely, that women are often competitive with their male counterparts. Rotich’s time, 2:29:48 unofficially, was less than a minute a mile behind Kenya’s Christopher Toroitich, who finished at 2:15:15.
Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain holds the women’s record according to Marathonguide.com, with a time of 2:15:25.
The men’s record is held by Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopa with a 2:03:59.
The Web site has a compelling chart that illustrates the dramatic improvement women have made since being allowed and encouraged to compete.
