Pimping the pastry: Is there a doughnut hole in KVBC’s lawsuit?
I freelanced for KVBC TV-3 for a number of years and in that time encountered many great people. I enjoyed my experience with the
station, made use of the extra income, and will cherish many moments with the gang from the 6 o'clock news.
Some of the reporters I met were among the hardest-working and most ethical I’ve known in nearly 30 years of daily journalism.
But not one of them looked forward to doing those corny and questionable Lamar’s Doughnuts “stories” during the morning news broadcasts. The entire staff cringed in private at the mention of the doughnut franchise owned by KVBC’s big boss, Jim Rogers.
Wanting to keep their jobs, and stay on the good side of their mercurial station owner, they of course complied with the request from
above to pimp the pastry, so to speak.
So it was with arched brow that I read Steve Bornfeld’s story in today’s Review-Journal outlining the lawsuit just filed by KVBC against its competitors for allegedly mixing advertising and news in a story.
If those competitors had a sense of humor – and I make no assumptions after watching their broadcasts for many years – they would send KVBC management dozens of doughnuts as part of their response to the lawsuit.
