Services set for former lawmaker

CARSON CITY -- Services will be today in Las Vegas for Jack Vergiels, the only legislator in Nevada history to serve as both speaker of the Assembly and Senate majority leader.

Vergiels died Wednesday after a long illness. He was 72.

The Las Vegas Democrat served in the Assembly from 1973 to 1984, and was speaker in 1983. He served in the Senate from 1985 through 1992, where he was majority leader in 1991. He was named to the Senate Hall of Fame in 2007.

Services will be at 5 p.m. at Palm Mortuary, Green Valley.
