Henderson OKs rate increases

Henderson residents will start the new year with higher water and sewer bills.

City Council members on Tuesday night approved a pair of rate increases for the city's roughly 85,000 utility customers.

The first increase involves the flat fee the city charges each month for water and sewer service. City spokeswoman Kathleen Richards said about 95 percent of customers will see their monthly service fees go up by $2.88 in 2010 and by another $2.91 in 2011.

The second rate hike is a direct pass-through of an increase approved in September by the Southern Nevada Water Authority, which is the wholesale water provider for Henderson and other local utilities. The authority will double its monthly commodity charge to 20 cents per 1,000 gallons in 2010, then increase it by another 10 cents per 1,000 gallons in 2011. Henderson officials plan to pass those increases on to customers, which for the average home is likely to mean roughly one extra dollar a month.

Both increases take effect on Jan. 1.
