BLM plans roundup of 2,500 wild horses

Bureau of Land Management officials are seeking comment on their plan to remove about 2,500 wild horses in Northern Nevada.

Officials say the proposed gather north of Gerlach in Washoe and Humboldt counties is needed to achieve the "appropriate management level" for wild horses in the area. They said it also is needed to prevent further range deterioration stemming from the current horse overpopulation in the areas.

Plans call for the gather to begin about Dec. 1 and continue through the end of February 2010.

Public comment on the preliminary environmental assessment is being accepted through Nov. 12.

The BLM also has begun removing 420 wild horses about 40 miles southeast of Winnemucca in Pershing and Humboldt counties.

HALF HOUR OF DIGGING

Cell phone recovered from trash dump

A man found his missing cell phone at a trash dump after dialing the number and listening for the ring.

Billy Boyd said he dropped the phone Tuesday while raking his yard outside Aspen and scooped it into a bag of leaves, which he left at a city recycling center. By the time he contacted city officials, the bin had been emptied onto a huge leaf pile at the dump.

After a half hour of dialing, listening and sifting at the dump, Boyd found his phone.

Landfill manager Chris Hoofnagle said it was the first time he knew that anyone found a lost item at the dump.

ONE DEAD

Suspect sought in school shooting

Police were searching Saturday for a person who shot and killed a 16-year-old girl and wounded two men following a football game at Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calif.

The girl, a student at the school, died at a hospital. It was unclear what led to Friday night's shooting, police Sgt. Dina Zapalski said. Gunfire erupted around 10 p.m., as several hundred people filed out of the game against archrival Poly High School.

A cousin identified the girl as Melody Ross, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported. City Councilman Gary DeLong described Ross as "an innocent bystander who was not involved" in the altercation.

An 18-year-old man and a 20-year-old man, who were not students, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
