Police: Man wounded by police had been arrested before

Las Vegas police said the man shot and wounded by officers late Friday had an “extensive arrest history” with the department, although they did not provide details.

The Las Vegas man, 36-year-old Michael Gibbs, was shot in a mobile home park at 3825 N. Nellis Blvd., next to Nellis Air Force Base, around 8 p.m.

Police said they received reports that a man was wielding a gun.

When officers arrived and approached the man, police said he pulled a large object from underneath his shirt. Later it was determined to be a Bowie-type knife.

Police spokeswoman officer Barbara Morgan said today that she was unable to list Gibbs’ criminal history with the department.

Gibbs was listed in critical condition at University Medical Center this afternoon. Hospital officials said they weren’t permitted to release updated condition information about the man.

According to police, officers tried to talk to Gibbs before he reached for his weapon. They then fired at Gibbs, hitting him several times.

Gibbs was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felony resisting arrest, police said.

The incident was the department’s 11th officer-involved shooting this year.
