THE LIST: DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores week of Sept. 29

DVDS
“Monsters vs. Aliens” (PG): In this computer-animated romp, a mysterious space ray transforms a bride (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) into a 50-foot Bridezilla — who becomes the latest member of a mutant monster team battling invading aliens. Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland and Stephen Colbert also turn up in the vocal cast.
Elsewhere on the recent-release front, “Away We Go” (R) follows a young couple (John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph), expecting their first child, who hit the road to connect with friends and family — and find the perfect place to start their own family. In “The Girlfriend Experience” (R), Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh focuses on a pricey Manhattan call girl (played by real-life porn queen Sasha Grey) juggling her boyfriend (Chris Santos) and various clients during the 2008 presidential campaign season.
Leading the pack of titles that never made it to local theaters: Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn in the romantic comedy “Management” (R), Kevin Spacey as a neurotic psychiatrist in “Shrink” (R), Cuba Gooding Jr. and Christian Slater in the thriller “Lies and Illusions” (R) and the documentary “The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club” (not rated), featuring such friends of the aviation pioneer as astronaut Buzz Aldrin and test pilot Chuck Yeager.
And the Yellow Brick Road’s more brilliant than ever in a special 70th-anniversary edition of 1939’s beloved fantasy “The Wizard of Oz” (not rated), arriving on Blu-Ray alongside the Jim Henson fantasies “Labyrinth” (PG) and “The Dark Crystal” (PG) and the controversial chiller “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” (not rated).
Among the TV titles making the jump to DVD (all unrated): “Cagney and Lacey: The Menopause Years,” an acclaimed 1971 BBC version of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” plus “Daybreak: The Complete Series,” “Life on Mars: The Complete Series,” “Kings: Season One,” “The Patty Duke Show: Season One,” “Wyatt Earp: The Complete Season Two,” “How I Met Your Mother: Season Four,” “The Unit: Season Four,” “CSI: NY — The Complete Fifth Season” and “Criss Angel Mindfreak: The Most Dangerous Escapes.”

CDS
Alice in Chains, “Black Gives Way to Blue”: It’s been 14 years since we last heard from Alice in Chains in the form of a new record, and even though their former frontman Layne Staley passed away years ago, the band has vowed not to suffer the same fate.
Having enlisted a new singer, William Duvall, who sounds eerily similar to Staley at times, Alice in Chains is back with a record that proves to be worth the wait.
Equally soulful, haunting and hard-hitting, “Black Gives Way To Blue” should satiate AIC fans’ appetite for reconstruction.
Also in stores: AFI, “Crash Love”; The Avett Brothers, “I and Love and You”; Breaking Benjamin, “Dear Agony”; Buckcherry, “Live & Loud 2009”; Mariah Carey, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”; Dizzee Rascal, “Tongue “N” Cheek”; Karen O and the Kids, “Where the Wild Things Are (Film soundtrack)”; Kill Hannah, “Wake Up the Sleepers”; Miranda Lambert, “Revolution”; Patty Loveless, “Mountain Soul II”; Lynyrd Skynyrd, “God & Guns”; Madness, “The Liberty of Norton Folgate”; Paramore, “Brand New Eyes”; Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, “Through the Devil Softly”; Barbra Streisand, “Love Is the Answer”; Strung Out, “Agents of the Underground”; Steve Vai, “Where the Wild Things Are”; Warren G, “The G Files”; and Zero 7, “Yeah Ghost.”
