Body found by firefighters is identified

The dead man who was found burned in the backyard of his northeast valley home on Tuesday has been identified as 76-year-old Thad V. Smith.

Smith died from asphyxia and smoke inhalation, according to the Clark County coroner's office, which also determined he had first-degree burns over 10 percent of his body.

Las Vegas police said they were called to the home, on the 4000 block of Calimesa Street, near Craig Road and Lamb Boulevard, by firefighters who were responding to a fire at the residence.

Police said the death was accidental.
