How smart is it to create a smart power grid?

Do you think we should be putting all our eggs in a cyberbasket?

After a few editorial boards with people pushing solar power, wind power, geothermal power and electric high-speed trains and clean coal technology and the need to move electricity from point to point from these intermittent sources, I was reading about the so-called smart grid.

I was in that northeastern blackout in August 2003 that started with a downed line in Ohio and dominoed across 10 states for as long as three days, and experienced first-hand the sensitive nature of our aging power grid.

So a smart grid that would prevent such expensive and frustrating events would be a good thing, right?

Then you wake up and find out some North Korea hacker has knocked out the Web sites of the Secret Service, the Treasury Department, Federal Trade Commission, the Transportation Department and several sites in South Korea.

So, how smart is that smart grid?
