Wind capsizes boat; six rescued on Lake Mead

Six people had to be rescued after high waves caused their boat to capsize Thursday afternoon at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

A woman in her 60s suffered from exhaustion and had some lacerations to her body but nobody else was injured, National Park Service spokesman Andrew Muñoz said.

The people had been in the water for about an hour before rangers rescued them, Muñoz said. They were on a 20- to 25-foot boat that began taking in water as waves reached four feet high.

The boat sank but everyone was wearing life vests, he said. A person on a jet ski notified authorities about 2:15 p.m.

Thursday saw wind gusts that reached 40 miles per hour as part of a front that brought unusually cool temperatures that will carry through the weekend.

A low pressure system out of Northern California will bring an expected high of 94 degrees today. The lowest high temperature for this date is 92 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The average high temperature is 104.

The high temperature on Thursday was 95 degrees, the weather service said.

Unusually low temperatures are supposed to last through the weekend, with high temperatures on Saturday in the mid-90s and Sunday seeing temperatures in the high-90s.

Winds will be light today and through the weekend.
